Barons coach Thibodeau linked to vacant U of A post

Fort McMurray Oil Barons head coach Gord Thibodeau is being mentioned as a potential candidate for the vacant coaching job at the University of Alberta.

The Edmonton Journal says Thibodeau could be a top candidate for the vacant CIS spot, which has been empty since Eric Thurston left in the Spring.

Interim coach Stan Marple was named the program’s first General Manager after the season, and will pick the new permanent head coach.

Thibodeau not only played four years at the U of A where there’s still a trophy for perseverance named in his honour, but he was also Marple’s teammate for two seasons there.

Thibodeau says while nothing’s ever certain in hockey, he still expects he’ll be back with the Oil Barons next season.

The Journal says the new U of A coach should be announced in early June.
