Energy regulator investigating reports of waterfowl in tailings ponds

The Alberta Energy Regulator is looking into reports of waterfowl swimming in the area’s tailings ponds.

Officials say they’re not sure yet how many birds or which companies are involved. The AER is responding after it got reports of possible problems yesterday afternoon.

“The AER is investigating these reports and ensuring companies in the area are taking all steps to
respond appropriately. Further information will be provided as it becomes available,” states the regulator.

A spokesperson said the birds came into contact with other oilsands infrastructure near Fort McMurray, but he didn’t provide further information. An update is expected to be released today.

Syncrude was fined $3 million for the deaths of more than 1,600 ducks that landed on its tailings pond in 2008.

In October 2010, more than 550 birds were destroyed when a winter storm forced the birds to land on tailings ponds managed by Syncrude and Suncor.
