Imperial Oil shuts down Kearl project as a precaution

An equipment malfunction led to a shutdown for several weeks of Imperial Oil’s Kearl project.

The company says the move is a precaution while it installs parts to deal with vibration detected at the site’s ore-crusher unit.

“Replacement parts, to address the issue, are being installed and production is expected to resume in the next several weeks,” the company said in a news release.

There’s no word on when operations will resume or how much production will be lost. Kearl was producing about 92,000 barrels per day on average through the third quarter, although that figure doesn’t take into account the impact of a 14-day shutdown in September.
