UPDATE: Man dies at CNRL Horizon Oil Sands mine

Canadian Natural Resources says a worker died from his injuries this morning at the Horizon Oil Sands mine.

The company says the worker was injured in an incident involving heavy mining equipment. Operations were put to a stop after the death.

“Canadian Natural extends its sincere condolences to the family, friends and co-workers. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” the company says in statement.

It wouldn’t comment any further or release more details, but Wood Buffalo RCMP say it was a fatal crash. Police responded to the scene at about 8:50 a.m. When they arrived, officers confirmed a man was killed in the crash.

“So our officers, if they’re not already on site, they are en route and they’ll be commencing a fatality investigation today,” says Occupational Health and Safety Spokesperson Brookes Merritt.

RCMP is still at the site with the municipal traffic unit and a collision reconstructionist. Police are still in the process of contacting the man’s family. RCMP is not releasing the man’s name but a spokesperson did say he is an Albertan, but not from Fort McMurray.
