Unemployment rises sharply in the oilsands region

The unemployment rate in the oilsands region spiked in November to 8.3 per cent as Canada lost 36,000 jobs as a whole just about half or 15,000 of those jobs were lost in Alberta. October’s unemployment rate in the Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake region was 7.3 per cent.

Alberta’s unemployment rate spiked by 0.4 percentage points to seven per cent, the highest since April 2010 according to Statistics Canada.

The National average is 7.1 per cent, up 0.1 percentage points from October as the total number of employed Canadians fell 0.2 percentage points to 17,987,000.
