Council reminds residents to care for mental health

Emotional wellbeing tip cards from AHS. SARAH ANDERSON. Reporter.

At the outset of Tuesday night’s council meeting Mayor Melissa Blake said they would pause first to talk about the importance of mental wellness and taking care of our own mental health and that of our friends, family, and neighbours following the wildfire and evacuation.

Councillor Sheldon Germain handed out cards to members of administration and council that were prepared by Alberta Health Services and included in your welcome home kits.

The cards are like playing cards only they include ’emotional wellbeing tips for disasters and emergencies.’

They are sorted by category. Diamond cards read “prepare” and have readiness tips. Clubs read ‘respond’ and offer tips about understanding your reaction to a stressful experience. Hearts encourage you to “connect” with family, friends and others who both share your experience and can provide a listening ear. Spades read “recover” and offer advice on healing, self-care, and getting help.

If you or someone you know needs help you’re encouraged to call 811 for the latest information on mental health services anywhere in Alberta. You can also call1-877-303-2642 for mental health advice.

If you or a loved one are in a crisis, you’re encouraged to go straight to your nearest emergency room or call 911.
