Going forward with the 2018 Winter Games up for debate at council

Council will be debating whether to continue with plans to host the 2018 Alberta Winter Games in February of 2018 based on feedback from stakeholders and the community.

Back on June 8 council approved a request from the Host Society appointees for 60 days to assess the impact of the recent wildfire on the community and on the recreation facilities intended to be used for the event.

The RMWB helped conduct the consultations with the public and stakeholders.

88 per cent of stakeholders agreed the municipality will be ready to host the games but only 49 per cent of the 279 members of the public surveyed said the region would be ready.

Some facilities were damaged in the fire but the majority won’t require any additional work to be ready for the games. The games will primarily take place at the Suncor Community Liesure Centre, the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre, the Frank Lacroix Arena, Miskanaw Golf and Country Club, Birchwood Trails, and Vista Ridge.

The concern, at the time of the request for additional time, was more the overall wellbeing and recovery of the community as a whole.

Council has already approved setting aside nearly $3.4 million for the host committee to bring the games to Wood Buffalo.

Tuesday night’s meeting will also include changes to eight capital projects and the budgetary implications of those changes.
