Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Up 95 cents, or 9.13 per cent, to $11.35 on 14-million shares.

Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TCK.B). Miner. Up $1.25, or 6.60 per cent, to $20.19 on 9.2-million shares.

Baytex Energy Corp. (TSX:BTE). Oil and gas. Down 40 cents, or 6.44 per cent, to $5.81 on 8.8-million shares.

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (TSX:POT). Fertilizer. Down $1.62, or 7.18 per cent, to $20.95 on 7.2-million shares. PotashCorp says subdued global markets caused a drop in its latest quarterly earnings. The company reported net earnings of $121 million in the second quarter, or 14 cents per share. That was down from $417 million, or 50 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Up two cents, or 0.30 per cent, to $6.63 on 7.2-million shares.

Goldcorp Inc. (TSX:G). Miner. Down $1.55, or 6.22 per cent, to $23.36 on 7.2-million shares.

Cenovus Energy Inc. (TSX:CVE). Oil and gas. Up $1.17, or 6.69 per cent, to $18.67 on 2.7-million shares. Cenovus posted a $267-million loss in the second quarter but says it’s on track to cut its costs by about half a billion dollars this year, compared with the original 2016 budget. The Calgary-based oil producer and refiner says its per-barrel operating costs have been reduced by 24 per cent at its oilsands operations and by nine per cent at is conventional crude operations. The company’s net loss for the quarter was equal to 32 cents per share and compared with a year-earlier profit of $126 million or 15 cents per share.
