Some of the most active companies traded Tuesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (14,684.85, up 2.88 points):

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Down 40 cents, or 6.90 per cent, to $5.40 on 10.4-million shares.

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (TSX:POT). Fertilizer. Up $2.40, or 11.48 per cent, to $23.30 on 8.9-million shares. Fertilizer companies Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan and Calgary-based Agrium (TSX:AGU) — up $8.56, or 7.35 per cent, to $125.09 on 952,426 shares — are in preliminary merger talks to create a Canadian agricultural giant worth well over $30 billion. Both companies issued statements today confirming the potential union after their shares were halted on the Toronto Stock Exchange. They said no agreement has been reached and there is no assurance that any transaction will result from these discussions.

B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Down 30 cents, or eight per cent, to $3.45 on 8.1-million shares.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Down 18 cents, or 1.39 per cent, to $12.76 on 5.2-million shares.

Baytex Energy Corp. (TSX:BTE). Oil and gas. Down 21 cents, or 3.37 per cent, to $6.02 on 4.8-million shares.

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Down 69 cents, or 6.40 per cent, to $10.09 on 4.8-million shares.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Miner. Down $1.15, or 4.80 per cent, to $22.81 on 3.7-million shares. Barrick Gold says former vice-president Mark Hill is returning to the company as chief investment officer, a new position. The Toronto-based company says Hill’s technical experience will complement the economic and financial expertise of chief financial officer Catherine Raw. During his previous time at Barrick, Hill was vice-president of evaluations and VP capital projects.
