Social profit organizations looking for wildfire recovery assistance can continue to apply for support through the Red Cross and the United Way.

Thanks to donations from across the country a total of $53 million is available to help social profit organizations in our region recover from the wildfire and to help them support the people in our community in their recovery.

$50 million comes from the Red Cross and was announced back in June and $3 million comes from the United Way through its Wildfire Recovery Fund which was announced following the Fire Aid Concert.

Some of the funds have already been dedicated to charitable and other organizations in the community. The United Way said Wednesday 34 per cent of its $3 million had been distributed or committed.

All registered charities are encouraged to apply for funding support.

Should your organization not be a registered charity but still be a legal entity supporting the community, like an indigenous group, a school board, or a school, you will qualify for support from the Red Cross.

You’re encouraged to reach out and ask regardless of your standing because even if your organization doesn’t fit this program the Red Cross and United Way may be able to direct you to other available supports.

If an organization’s application for support exceeds $100,000, the request will be reviewed by a joint panel of local organizations called the Community Partnership Table.

Tha goal is to have five application waves process within the first year, including the wave that has already seen approvals.

Another two waves will be approved between now and Christmas.
