The Keyano Huskies men’s volleyball team will attempt to remain perfect this weekend as they travel to take on the NAIT Ooks.

To go along with their (6-0) record, the Huskies have lost only two sets all season while winning 18. The Huskies are led by Jakub Zdybek who has chipped in 64 kills through six games including 25 kills last week in what was an absolutely dominating performance from the Huskies as they rolled all over the (1-5) Grande Prairie Wolves.

This week the Huskies could have one of their toughest tests as of yet when they take on the Ooks. The (3-1) Ooks are coming off a mixed bag weekend as they were swept last Friday against Lakeland, but followed that up with a decisive 3-1 performance the next night. The Ooks are led by Hamish Hazelden who has been a force this year ranking third in the ACAC with 77 kills.

“We have to make sure we don’t get complacent, that’s kind of what happens when teams go on streaks like this, but we are working hard at practices, so we will be ready” said Huskies Head Coach Keegan Kuhr

Joining the men will be the lady Huskies who haven’t been as successful this season being losers in 4 of 6 matches so far. The women’s Huskies team is coming off being dominated last weekend by the hands of the (5-1) Wolves and will look to regain their momentum against the (2-2) NAIT Ooks.

Danya Nieman, who comes into the weekend set with 49 kills and also leads the Huskies in almost every statistical category, will have to have a good weekend if the Huskies want to have any success. The Ooks, who also were winless last weekend, will look for a rebound weekend from Nalani Stang. Stang, who currently sits in 18th ACAC wide, comes in with 38 kills to go along with eight aces.

First serve for the games will be at 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men on Friday and 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men on Saturday afternoon.

It was a tough weekend that included a heartbreaking 88-87 loss to Concordia University for the Huskies men’s basketball team. Despite 47 points between the two games for Jonathas Michel, the Huskies were unable to get past the Thunder who were once again led by the dominating Brett Jakubec, who scored a team high 28 points on Friday night.

This weekend, the Huskies will be on home court as they welcome the undefeated NAIT Ooks. With the exception of their 85-68 win back on September 28th, the Ooks have won their other three games by a combined 19 points. Jackson Jacob scored a season high 39 points last Friday and followed it up with 23 points on Saturday. That moved him into fourth place ACAC wide with an average 28.5 points per game while shooting a very impressive 52.5 percent.

Chris Mooney also boasts a strong presence as he comes off a 17 point 15 rebound performance against Grande Prairie six days ago. This will be the final home Huskies game until November 25th and 26th when they welcome the Wolves to the Sport & Wellness Center.

“We didn’t show up at all and it showed on both Friday and Saturday, we can play with Concordia, but our lack of focus was very evident” said Huskies women’s Head Coach Dwayne Vigilance after his teams performance one week ago.

The lady Huskies are coming off two losses last weekend against the Thunder from Concordia University. Despite 20 points from Moiyan Toure on Friday and 20 from Sylivia Smith-Gatson on Saturday, the Huskies ladies’ team fell by a combined 28 points.

This weekend, they welcome the (4-0) Nait Ooks who have been absolutely dominant so far this season. Sydney Hurlburt leads the Ooks who have not let up more then 48 points this season while their lowest scoring game was a 13 point win in a 57-44 result two weeks ago against Concordia University.

The Ooks are coming in after sweeping Grande Prairie last weekend with 94-39 and 86-41 results.

“They’re a tough matchup, but having a young team like we do, if we show up and be engaged the entire game, you just never know what will happen in the end” said Vigilance.

The women will tip it off at 6 p.m. Friday night at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, while the men will start play at 8 p.m. Both teams will return to the court Saturday afternoon with the women at 12 and the men at 2 p.m.
