RMWB starting surveys in Abasand, Beacon Hill and Waterways to help with recovery

A view of Waterways the day before all restrictions were lifted for accessing the community.

Starting in the coming weeks, land surveyors hired by the RMWB will be working in the three hardest-hit neighbourhoods of our community, Abasand, Beacon Hill, and Waterways, to conduct site and topographical surveys as part of the recovery process.

By doing the work proactively, accurate grading maps will be created of each neighbourhood where, in some cases, they have been out of date because new construction hasn’t taken place for several years. The grading maps will encompass each neighbourhood and the properties inside and will be used for rebuilding and to identify possible drainage issues.

“These areas are some of the oldest in Fort McMurray and as a result we need to update our maps of these communities,” said Erin O’Neill, Operations Manager, Wood Buffalo Recovery Task Force. “Completing this work now will allow Planning & Development to provide the best guidance for rebuilding residents, creating positive drainage effects across the community.”

The RMWB has contracted IBI Group Inc. to identify and confirm existing grade elevations; road, curb and gutter elevations and locations; as well as the location of right-of-ways, easements and buried utilities on properties within each neighbourhood.

The new master grading plan will be in place by December 15, 2016, and the RMWB said the aim is to help both residents and municipal planners continue their rebuild plans with confidence.
