The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is reminding residents that winter storms can strike our region quickly and unexpectedly.

Residents should prepare in advance for winter storms, or any emergencies by following the three steps:

  • Know the risks
  • Make a plan
  • Get a kit

“Every winter, Wood Buffalo is at risk of being struck by a severe winter storm. Being prepared for winter storms is the best to keep you and your family safe,” said Chris Graham, Assistant Deputy Chief, Emergency Management. “Make a plan for your household, put together an emergency kit and know where to find up-to-date information during an emergency.”

In the emergency kit should be basic supplies that will allow you to be self-sufficient for three days.

In a house-hold emergency kit items such as:

  • Water (six litres per person)
  • Food that won’t spoil such as canned food or energy bars
  • A first aid kid
  • Some cash in smaller bills.

Items that could be left in the vehicle to have on hand in case an evacuation were to occur would be:

  • Blanket
  • First aid kit, with seat belt cutter
  • Jumper cables
  • Extra windshield fluid

If a winter storm was to happen residents can check the RMWB’s Facebook and Twitter for up-to-date information, listen to local media for severe weather warnings and advice and check the Environment Canada website.
