Huskies women's basketball strengthens playoff spot; overall impressive weekend for Huskies athletics

Women’s Volleyball

In what turned out to be a disappointing season, the Keyano Huskies women’s volleyball team finished their season with a win over the weekend. The Huskies (7-17) welcomed the (1-21) Concordia University Thunder to the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Center for a two-game set.

Despite both teams being eliminated from the playoffs, the ladies gave it all they had as they tried to finish off the season strong. The Huskies had a 12-8 lead in the fifth set on Friday evening, but the Thunder staged a late comeback to win their first game of the year 25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 12-25, 17-15.

Game two was much of the same with both teams battling back and forth. Fifth-year player Nicole Robinson had another great game for the Huskies that resulted in the Huskies grabbing a 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 11-25, 15-13 win.

Men’s Volleyball

As it has been much of the season, the Keyano Huskies (22-2) showed why they are one of the best teams in the nation.

The #3 ranked nationally Huskies cruised to two victories over the weekend against the visiting Thunder.

In game one, Blazej Pellowski led the squad with 12 kills in what turned out to be a 25-16, 25-17, 25-15 win. Game two was much of the same, as the Huskies controlled most of the game once again being led by Blazej Pellowski who chipped in 10 kills.

The Huskies who will finish first in the North division will now hit the road for the ACAC Championships in Red Deer in two weeks time.

With the South division still having one week left, the Huskies will not know who they will play until next week, but it will be the fourth place team in the tight South.

Women’s Basketball

After winning both games this weekend, the Keyano Huskies women’s basketball team will have the chance to clinch a playoff spot this weekend at home against the Kings University.

The Huskies went into Grande Prairie and picked up two wins by a combined 58 points over the Wolves including an impressive 91-48 drubbing on Friday evening.

The Huskies (13-9) will now welcome the lowly (5-17) Kings University this weekend.

With just one win this weekend, the Huskies will advance to the ACAC Championships which takes place in Lethbridge.

Men’s Basketball

It wasn’t their prettiest effort of the year, but the Keyano Huskies (7-15) picked up two wins over the weekend against the Wolves (5-15).

In game one, Rami Ghanem who has had an outstanding second half of the season led the Huskies with 20 points. The Huskies narrowly outscored the Wolves by four points in the fourth quarter to pick up a 91-89 win on Friday.

On Saturday, Jonathas Michel went off for 29 points as his Huskies extended their win streak to two games with an 83-80 nailbiter.

The Huskies will now attempt to pick up four straight wins this weekend when they host the lowly Kings University (3-19) at the Sport & Wellness Center.
