Two men, including one from Calgary, have been given hefty fines and suspensions for driving at excessive speeds in northern Alberta last year.

On March 28, 2016, a Calgary man was clocked going 181 km/hr in a 101 zone on Highway 63 near Boyle on a radar.

Then on May 17, a Bonnyville resident in a Camaro passed other vehicles on Highway 831 near the community, at one point hitting 202 km/hr.

RCMP Cst. Paul Banks said the speeds are certainly unusual.

“Excessive speeding will not be tolerated; it’s a major concern for RCMP,” he said.

A justice of the peace recently gave the 31-year-old Calgarian a $1,750 fine and a 50-day suspension, while the 20-year-old man from Bonnyville got $2,300 and 60 days.

“It’s not something that you see every day,” he said. “When you do, the adrenaline level goes up, because by the sheer nature of it and the excessiveness of it and you know when you see it.”
