On Friday, March 24 at 10:00 a.m. the La Loche Winter Trail will close for the season and the load limit for the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road will be reduced to 5,000 kg.

This load limit will remain in effect till the end of the season, which will be announced when it is determined.

Recent weather conditions and anticipated warmer temperatures are both huge factors when analyzing road conditions and closures.

Once the La Loche Winter Trail closes, motorists are advised that rig mats in the Hay Meadows Creek area will be removed and the trail will no longer be passable.

Conditions are rough in some areas on the Fort Chipewayan Winter Road and motorists are advised to drive with caution. High clearance 4×4 vehicles are recommended.

Always be prepared for emergencies as there are no regular services like road patrol, gas stations or cell phone coverage along the winter road.

All of these precautions have been put in place to maintain the integrity of the roads and for public safety.
