The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has received an Animal Welfare Leadership and Innovation Award for Cooperation in Emergency Response from the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies.

The RMWB and nine other organizations based in our province received the award at the CFHS National Animal Welfare Conference that was held in Ottawa from April 8-11.

“It’s an honour to have the team recognized for the collaborative animal rescue and recovery efforts during the 2016 wildfire,” said Jeffrey Simpkins, Animal Control Supervisor. “Over 1,200 community pets were rescued and reunited with their owners, which wouldn’t have been possible without the help and cooperation of all these organizations.”

Below are the nine other organizations that were recognized for their collaboration efforts:

  • Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS)
  • Alberta Spay and Neuter Task Force
  • Alberta SPCA
  • Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA)
  • Calgary Humane Society
  • Edmonton Humane Society
  • Fort McMurray SPCA
  • Meika’s Birdhouse
  • Red Deer & District SPCA
