Skills Canada Competition set to hit our community

Last Updated Apr 24, 2017 at 3:33 pm MDT

Students from around the Wood Buffalo Region will show off their skills on Thursday April 27 at Keyano College and Fort McMurray Composite High School.

The event is a part of the annual competitions that Skills Canada holds across the country for high school students.

Students are given a challenge that they must complete in a given time period. Their work then goes before the judges.

“This is a great opportunity for young people to see how they stack up against others in their age group,” Said Peter Lawlor, VP Academic.  “It also builds comradery between students from different schools. It is a good day.

Before the students show off their skills on the 27, on April 26, registration and introductions to key event personnel will be held.

Safety orientations and tours of facilities will prepare competitors for the competition the next day while light refreshments will be provided.

“Thursday is when the fun really starts,” Said Lawlor.  “The cabinet making, carpentry and welding competitions will happen here, at Keyano.  The culinary arts students will be held in the Keyano Cafeteria and will be judged by Candace Cheney.”

Cheney has been judging the culinary arts and baking competition for the past three years.

In 2002, Cheney won Gold at Provincials, before moving on to the National Championships with Team Newfoundland.

The competition is set to begin at 7:00 a.m. on April 27, with the last group finishing up around 3:00 p.m.

The winners will then be announced at 3:30 p.m. at the Keyano Recital Theatre.

“The winners of our competition will advance to attend the Provincial Skills competition in Edmonton on May 9 and 10,” Said Lawlor. “We look forward to sending our best to that event.”
