Emergency access roads are being built within our community for use as a secondary access route in the event of an emergency or disaster.

The roads are set to be built in Abasand, Beacon Hill and Wood Buffalo and construction of the three roads is scheduled to begin in late June and early July.

The Emergency Access Road in Abasand will incorporate the newly built temporary construction access road in that community, which travels east from Abbotswood Drive to Abasand Drive.

An extension will be built from the foot of that roadway between Abasand Drive and Memorial Drive southbound.

The Road in Beacon Hill will be built as an extension of Beaconwood Drive, connecting it across Beacon Hill Drive directly to Memorial Drive southbound.

In Wood Buffalo the road will be built on the existing path that connects Woodward Lane in the community to Wolverine Drive in Thickwood.

The path will be widened and will be paved.

Use of the roads in Abasand and Beacon Hill will be restricted outside of emergency situations, and the road in Wood Buffalo will remain a recreational pathway unless there is an emergency.

Waterways and Rural Areas

Pre-design work for an emergency access road in waterways is under way and will incorporate an extension of the Saline Creek Parkway.

Emergency access roads for rural areas are part of the municipalities 2018 Capital Budget plan and the design and construction of those roads will take place in 2018.

The cost of pre-design, design and construction of all of the emergency access roads will be submitted as part of the Municipality’s claim to the Disaster Recovery Program.

Maintenance costs for the roads will be covered by the Municipality’s Public Works department through Parks and Roads Services.
