MOB open 2017-18 AJHL season Sept. 16 in GP

The Alberta Junior Hockey has released the schedule for the upcoming 2017-2018 season.

All 16 AJHL teams will once again play a 60 game schedule with 29 home and away dates and two games being played at the annual AJHL Showcase in Camrose at the end of September.

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons will open the season on the road for a two game set in Grande Prairie on September 16th and 17th.

The MOB will host the Lloydminster Bobcats for their home opener the following week on Friday September 22nd.

Friday and Saturday nights will be the Oil Barons primary home dates with 11 Friday games at the Casman Centre and eight on Saturday’s. The MOB will play four home games on Thursday’s, two Monday afternoon games and one each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.

Friday and Saturday night home games at the Casman Centre will now have 7:30 p.m. start times as opposed to the usual 8:00 p.m. start.

The Barons regular season will conclude on March 3rd with four straight games against the team that knocked them out of the 2017 AJHL playoffs the Whitecourt Wolverines.

The MOB are coming off their fourth most successful regular season in franchise history which saw them go 44-13-3 en route to their first North Division title in nine years.

Being brought back this year, the AJHL champion will play the British Columbia Hockey League champion in a best of seven series to determine which western team will advance to the RBC Cup. After five years, the Western Canada Cup will not return and the Alberta vs. BC format that was used from 1962-2012 will return.

This will be the final AJHL season with a North and South Division as the league will move to an interlock schedule for the 2018-2019 season in which all 16 teams will play each opponent four times.
