RCMP officer charged after striking and killing pedestrian

An Alberta RCMP officer has been charged with dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

On August 21, 2016 Constable Michelle Phillips was responding to an accident on Highway 881 that a vehicle had hit a man who was walking on the road.

Phillips arrived on scene at a high-rate of speed where she allegedly hit the already injured man, resulting in his death.

She also allegedly clipped the hand of another individual who was on scene causing significant injury.

At the time of the incident Phillips had been with the RCMP for one year.

She has been suspended with pay and will remain off duty while the RCMP performs a Code of Conduct review and all the criminal charges against her are resolved.

She is scheduled to appear in court on August 2, 2017.
