School districts in RMWB to receive Classroom Improvement Funding

The Fort McMurray Catholic School District (FMCSD), the Fort McMurray Public School District (FMPSD) and the Northland School Division (NSD) will be receiving a chunk of change from the province.

Minister of Education, David Eggen, announced on June 20, 2017 that an additional $75 million would be invested in students and teachers through the Classroom Improvement Fund (CIF).

The CIF was part of an agreement between the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) and the Teacher Employer bargaining Association in May.

“Our government is protecting and improving education and making life better for Alberta students. We have continued to provide boards with stable and predictable funding, and now the new Classroom Improvement Fund will allow us to go further in supporting our students and preparing them for their futures. We are pleased to see school boards’ representatives and teachers come together to put this new money to good use,” said Eggen.

FMCSD will receive $706 thousand and FMPSD will be given $651 thousand, the funds are being distributed across the province based on student enrolment for the 2016/17 school year.

The NSD which has schools in Anzac, Fort Chipewyan, Conklin, Janvier and Fort McKay and will receive $268 thousand.

School boards and teacher will create a joint proposal for how they would like the CIF money used to improve the classroom experience.

The money can be allocated to different resources including new teachers and support staff, in-classroom resources and professional development supports.

School boards have until Dec. 15, 2017 to submit their proposals for the funds.
