Fort McMurray students recognized for their art accomplishments

Arts Council Wood Buffalo (ACWB) and Suncor announced the 2017 recipients of the Suncor Student Art Awards (SSAA).

Throughout the year, Suncor hosts three student art exhibitions at their Business Centre, one for public high schools, one for catholic high schools, and another that includes the Suncor employee voted favourite pieces from the first 2 exhibitions along with the work of junior high students from both districts.

The purpose of the program is to increase the reach and impact of artwork created within the school system and to build the confidence of emerging artists to exhibit their work.

The Kim Jenkins Student Art Scholarship, as well as various cash and gift card prizes were awarded to high school and junior high students in both school districts.

The recipients of the awards were decided by Suncor employee voting.

First place recipients received $500, second place $300, and third place $200.

Fourth and fifth place received $50 gift cards to WeeBounce Art Supplies store, located in The Art Foundry at River Station, Fort McMurray.

The Catholic High Schools exhibition award recipients:

  • First place to Amy Munoz Morales of Father Mercredi High School;
  • Second place to Richelle Stewart of Holy Trinity High School;
  • Third place to Angelica Garcia of Father Mercredi High School;
  • Fourth place to Olivia Heskett of Father Mercredi High School;
  • Fifth place to Amy Janes of Holy Trinity High School.

The Public High Schools exhibition award recipients:

  • First place to Sylvie Kavanagh of Westwood High School;
  • Second place to Shania Waterman of Composite High School;
  • Third place to Christopher Rose of Westwood High School;
  • Fourth place to Hyeqa Amhad of Westwood High School;
  • Fifth place to Bailey Haas of Composite High School.

The Junior High Schools exhibition award recipients:

  • First and second place to Bridget Fecteau of Holy Trinity High School;
  • Third place to Camryn Hannigan of Father Mercredi High School;
  • Fourth place to Carissa Fortin of Father Mercredi High School;
  • Fifth place to Kirsten Tulco of Father Mercredi High School.

The Kim Jenkins Student Art scholarship

The Kim Jenkins Student Art scholarship is a $1500 award given annually to a Grade 12 student pursuing visual arts, design or similar field, at the post-secondary level upon graduating.

The recipient and the runner ups were determined by a jury of local professional visual artists.

Angelica Garcia of Father Mercredi High School was the recipient of the 2017 Kim Jenkins Student Scholarship.

First runner up is Emily Bartlett of Holy Trinity High School and second runner up is Athena Wyse of Composite High School.
