A local high school student has won a TD Scholarship for Community Leadership of up to $70,000.

Angela Wang, a grade 12 student from Westwood Community High School was awarded for her academic and extracurricular activities.

TD hands out 20 Community Leadership Scholarships each year to recognize achievements of youth who are making a difference.

The scholarship includes paid summer employment, mentor-ships, annual gatherings and networking opportunities.

Wang was a founding member of the Coding Club at Westwood and has been ranked first in academics for the past two years. She also won an award for highest overall score in the University of Alberta Interdisciplinary Science Competition.

“I’m absolutely amazed by the opportunities that the TD scholarship has given me. I remember the total shock of the phone call, and needing a few moments of silence to take it all in,” said Wang.

“Nobody really expects to win such a huge scholarship. I had originally planned to take on student loans and get a part-time job, but receiving the TD scholarship means I can spend more time pursuing the things that really matter to me, things like volunteering, extracurricular activities and getting involved on campus.”

Wang said what drives her to volunteer is growing up in an immigrant family, she wants to give back and help create the same possibilities for other families and children.

Christine Tulk, Westwood Counsellor nominated Wang for the scholarship.

“Angela has been very involved in Westwood’s programs and activities. She has been integral to the Writer’s Club, and Model UN. Angela has also been very active in our drama department, acting in two of our major productions, as well as competing and earning an award in the Regional One Act Festival. This year, she is the Student Council President for our school and has been an active member throughout high school,” said Tulk.

“She is an exemplary student, who is very well respected by both her peers and the staff.”

Wang plans to attend the U of A or UBC to study engineering.
