Council held a special meeting last night in which every item on the agenda passed unanimously.

The big-ticket item was a public hearing on the rezoning of land in Waterways to allow the Tabernacle of Praise Church to rebuild and expand.

The land was formerly home to the neighbourhood’s community centre but council noted that the money from the sale could go towards funding a brand new centre.

Many residents of Waterways voiced their supports for the rebuild of the church and council approved it.

Council also voted unanimously for an amendment to the land use bylaw to allow an indoor playground to be built in Gregoire on Macalpine Crescent.

The playground would be for children ages 12 and under.

Council heard a report on a policy for municipal employees working overtime hours during an extraordinary event, such as last year’s wildfire, that they approved.

The policy outlines how employees who work extra hours will be recognized and sets out the criteria for activating a situation as an extraordinary event.

It also ensures overtime compensation is compliant with the Alberta Employment Standards Code and will help that overtime is administered consistently and equitably, is well documented, recorded and paid accurately.

At the meeting council also voted unanimously to sell land in Gregoire to be used for a parking lot for the Fort McMurray Business Centre and approved the first reading of a bylaw to update the Chief Administrative Officer position.

The next scheduled Council meeting takes place Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. in council chambers at Jubilee Plaza.
