The organizing committee of the Fort McMurray Half Marathon announced a new route for the event which takes place this year on Sun, Sept. 17.

“This new route is designed to engage our participants while providing an enjoyable marathon experience,” said Kelsey Stefanizyn, Fort McMurray Half Marathon Organizing Committee Event Chair.

“As we celebrate five years of half marathon events in our community, it’s a great opportunity to introduce a new route and a fresh experience for our enthusiastic marathon participants. This route, which includes the TOTAL Aboriginal Interpretive Trail for all participants and parts of Thickwood for our longer distance runners, provides new challenges as well as a chance to enjoy different locations in our community. The feedback we received after the marathons held in 2015 and 2016 indicated the desire for inclusion of more interesting terrain as well as an incline, and we hope this new route will provide this desired aspect for marathon participants.”

The Fort McMurray Half Marathon includes a Half Marathon, 10 km, 5 km and 3 km road races and a Kid’s Fun Run.

Route maps are now available online.

Hundreds of community members have been participating in the event since the inaugural half marathon in 2013.

Registration for the event can be done online or in person at the Shell Place Box Office.
