Sheila Lalonde is running for a Ward 3 council seat in the upcoming municipal election. She has always thought of running for council and frequently follows along with the meetings and has been a resident of Fort McMurray since 1977.

“It’s time for a change, we have has the same councillors for a very long time, so it’s time for some new faces, and new ideas and we will take it from there,” said Lalonde.

Currently she is a homemaker and has worked mostly in customer service.

“I think I could make a difference,” said Lalonde. “I don’t bring any council experience to the table, sometimes you just got to put your hat into the ring and having no experience may be a good thing, it may not be but I learn quickly.”

At this moment she does not have a campaign platform.

“That’s a really big learning curve when you’re just deciding to run for council so I am still working on my platform,” said Lalonde

As a councillor one of the biggest things she would like to see get done is the downtown revitalizing.

“I’d like to see a park type setting with stores and cafes and a walking area,” said Lalonde. “It would look very pretty.”

Roads and infrastructure are also some of her main concerns.

“Sapre Creek is very lucky compared to Draper when it comes to the amount of dust from our roads. It all needs to be repaired in a timely fashion. The sewers need to be done in a timely fashion.”

She would also like to see all roads in Draper be paved.

Currently, Al Vinni, who is running for Mayor in the election is the councillor for Ward 3. Lalonde doesn’t know how much different of a councillor she would be for her ward but she plans on being a louder voice and to work as a team member.

“I will work very hard for them, I will be there voice,” said Lalonde. “They just have to let me know what they want me to be their voice for, so I am in the process with meeting with Draper and Sapre people.”

Lalonde told MyMcMurray that she is in the process of getting organized and plans on having a meet up with Ward 3 constituents in September.

Local business owner, Brad Lucier is also running for Ward 3.

The municipal election is on Oct. 16.
