The home that saw the first Stanley Cup for the Edmonton Oilers is closing its doors.

A unanimous vote from Edmonton city councillors has approved a plan to shutter Northlands Coliseum on Jan. 1, 2018.

Councillors say it’s the best use of tax dollars for the rink.

The NHL’s Edmonton Oilers were the prime tenant of the rink, until last year when the team moved to the new downtown Rogers Place.

The concrete Coliseum saw some Wayne Gretzky’s signature scoring moments in the 1980s.

Dave Lumley fired the puck into an empty net in 1984 to seal the Oilers’ win over the New York Islanders for Edmonton’s first Stanley Cup.
