Ahead of the Rural Coalition mayoral debate on Tuesday, candidate Don Scott has renewed his commitment to the outlying communities of the region.

Scott’s platform consists of five pillars, one related to the rural communities states if Scott is elected he would:

  • Work with residents to understand their concerns, ensure citizens are engaged on issues affecting them and encourage citizen participation in discussions on the future of the region.
  • Promote equality and celebrate the strong diversity of our region.
  • Meet the commitments made to our rural communities at the time of amalgamation
  • Work with our First Nations and Métis partners to meet their needs and make our region more successful.

“While the key pillars of my platform have relevance to all residents of this region, our continuing success will be contingent on ensuring we understand the needs of all residents and how these may differ by community. One of the suggestions raised during my recent discussions with rural community leaders was the potential for development of a committee that would be comprised of members of the rural communities and that could advise Mayor and Council on the diverse issues in their respective communities,” said Scott. “I believe this is an idea worthy of exploration and would provide an opportunity to further develop communication and connection in our region.”

The Rural Coalition is a collective of every First Nation, every Metis local and every non-indigenous community in the rural areas of the RMWB.

They are hosting a forum for all Ward 1 candidates and mayoral candidates to hear their views on important issues that face rural residents.

The forum is Oct. 3 from 6-9 p.m. at the UNIFOR Building and is specific to rural residents with limited seating for non-rural residents.

Only rural specific questions will be answered at the event.
