In light of the massive wildfires in British Columbia that took place this summer and the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, a new documentary looks at the science of fire.

Into the Fire is directed, written and produced by Leora Eisen.

“I hope the outcome is that people gain an appreciation for education and science when it comes to fire,” said Eisen.

“Even scientist will tell you, this natural phenomenon that has existed even long before we were on earth still has a lot of mysteries.  There is still a lot we don’t understand but if we learn more about how it spreads, why it spreads and how we could reduce our risk it’s only going to help us in the future.”

The film features a wildfire specialist who surveyed the aftermath of the Fort McMurray fire, a University of Alberta wildfire expert as he heads to B.C.’s biggest blaze to give viewers a glimpse into fire behaviour, an Australian fire ecologist who shares the relationship with fire and people and Ottawa Fire’s Peter McBride who explains how firefighters have had to change tactics.

Into the Fire premieres on CBC’s The Nature of Things on Sunday, November 5 at 8 p.m.
