Men and women throughout the region will be lacing up their skates for a little longer than the typical 60 minutes.

Handlebar Hockey is a 24-hour charity hockey game in support of Movember, a global movement working to tackle health issues faced by men such as, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health concerns and suicide prevention.

Clinton Bretecher, organizer of Handlebar Hockey, said that being from Fort McMurray he knows of the significant male population and wanted to bring awareness to their health issues.

“I have met a lot of people, heard a lot of stories and after a while you start to connect with those,” said Bretecher. “I have been through my own challenges in my life, so for me, Movember struck a real chord.”

Bretecher decided a 24-hour hockey game would be way to connect with the community and have some fun.

“I know that with everything that happened with the wildfires last year, to again, there is a lot of people who are hurting up here,” he added. “I thought 24-hours of hockey in a hockey minded community would be good for raising awareness and good for having fun.”

No tickets are required for the game, puck drop is 7:30 p.m. at the Casman Centre on Nov. 17.

The game will not finish until Nov. 18.

There will be a donation box at the door and silent auction items to bid on, all money raised will go to Movember Canada.
