RMWB encourages everyone to stay off ice

April 2017

As the temperature continues to dip, our ponds and waterways have started to freeze over, but the ice is still too thin to walk on.

If you aren’t planning to travel across a frozen body of water, carrying safety supplies could be lifesaving in an emergency. Carry ropes, ice picks, waterproof matches and a flotation device. These supplies could come in handy for your own emergency or if you spot another.

Should a fall happen it’s important to keep layers of clothing on for insulation and turn yourself towards the direction you came from. If you have an ice pick or anything sharp, use the device to propel yourself onto the ice surface.

If you witness a fall, call 911 and never run up to the hole where the person fell. Throw a rope, branch, cable or something buoyant from shore to help the casualty.

The RMWB has a full list of safety tips and recovery procedures on their website. If you’re unsure about ice conditions contact the Fish & Wildlife Office at 780 743-7200.
