RCMP sees increase of family violence

Cases of family violence in the region are on the way to increasing compared to 2016 according to the RCMP.

Corporal Deobald says since the wildfire, there has been a noticeable increase in family violence related calls, but can’t directly correlate it to be the cause.

“In 2016 we had 867 calls for service assisting in reported family violence cases, in 2017 we’re currently at 734.”

With less than two months left of the year, that number is projecting at 900 cases by year’s end.

Deobald says that these cases are taken very seriously and that victims, and those who know victims have options.

“They can call a family violence info line at 310-1818, however, obviously, if it emergency situation to call 911.”
