Progress is being made to support the rural and indigenous communities of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Ron Quintal, President of the McKay Metis Community Association said Tuesday night’s council meeting was a breath of fresh air.

“There wasn’t a single councillor last night who didn’t speak in favour of the rural and indigenous communities.”

He calls it a new era of cooperation with the rural and indigenous communities.

Mayor and council noted that any decisions regarding land usage should happen in the community.

“This is exactly the kind of cooperation we were hoping for.”

A council meeting will be held in Fort McKay on Jan. 23 to discuss the community’s area structure plan.

They also motioned to intervene on behalf of Conklin to put a stop to the construction of the class 2 industrial landfill that was planned to be less than 2 km from the community.
