Composite High School may be getting a face-lift, but the name won’t be changing.

Superintendent of the Fort McMurray Public School Board, Doug Nicholls said they received immense feedback about keeping the name.

“There is tremendous history with Composite High School. The community, the students’ parents, even grandparents filled in the survey. At the end of the day we looked at it administratively and said rather than looking for change, clearly there is interest in retaining the name,” said Nicholls.

“What we are looking to do is build on the support that is out there for Composite High School and make it a greater school.”

The high school was built in 1974, students started attending in January 1977.

The school is currently under-going a $29-million renovation, the idea to change the name was to accompany the modernized school.

“We came out of a large group session of re-visioning comp about two years ago and one of the suggestions was to look at a possible name change, look at something more current,” said Nicholls. “When we went out to the broader community, including the students, there just wasn’t the same interest moving forward with the name change.”

Renovations of the high school is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
