December 3 is the International Day for Persons with Disabilities

International Day for Persons with Disabilities will be commemorated on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017.

The purpose of the day is to increase awareness and understanding of disability issues, and mobilize support for persons with disabilities.

The Regional Advisory Committee on Inclusion, Diversity and Equality (RACIDE) and Regional Inclusive Committee (RIC) of Wood Buffalo will host a public event in McMurray Experience.

The RIC works to improve accessibility, inclusion and independence for people of all abilities and will be launching Dear Wood Buffalo, a campaign intended to end the stigma for Canadians with disabilities, at the event

“The concept of diversity includes acceptance, respect and removing barriers so everyone is included,” said Bindu Shah, Chair of RACIDE.  “When barriers to inclusion are removed, not only are persons with disabilities empowered to participate in societal life but their entire community benefits.”

As part of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the province is recognizing people with disabilities and Albertans who are creating inclusive communities.

Shauna MacKinnion from Fort McMurray is one of the 2017 award recipients for with the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities Awards.

The awards recognize leadership and achievement in creating and promoting inclusive communities.
