Impaired Driving Month brings CheckStop Blitz

Hundreds of RCMP officers and Alberta Sheriffs will be hitting the road tomorrow to take drivers, impaired by drugs or alcohol, off the roads.

With December being Impaired Driving Month, along with changing weather conditions and the upcoming holidays, the Alberta RCMP are reminding motorists that driving impaired creates a danger for all road users.

The large-scale CheckStop Blitz will take place province wide.

Superintendent Rick Gardner, Alberta Sheriffs says everyone has a part of play, including having a plan when heading out to festivities.

“Impaired driving is a leading cause of death and injury on Alberta roads, but we can’t tackle this issue alone,”

Police remind everyone that impairment by drugs and alcohol results in a shorter attention span, an altered perception of time and distance and slower reaction times. Drivers suspected of being impaired will be subject to road-side sobriety tests that may result in immediate licence suspensions and/or criminal charges.

The CheckStops will run throughout the entire day Dec. 2. Some CheckStops will be mobile, and moving locations in order to cover as much of the province as possible. At some locations, municipal police officers will be working alongside the RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs.
