A serious collision on the morning of Dec. 16 has left two of Keyano College’s student athletes dead.

At approximately 10:33 a.m. Wood Buffalo RCMP and Emergency Medical Services responded to a 911 call reporting a collision on Highway 63, about 95 kilometers south of Fort McMurray.

A flat bed tow truck, who had one lone occupant, was rear ended by a car while it was stationary.

The 19-year old female driver of the car succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The passenger, also a 19-year old female, was transported by Local HERO to an Edmonton-area hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. She also succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

In a media release the college said they are deeply saddened by the event and that their flags will be at half-staff in honour of the students.

Keyano’s Mental Health Team is providing trauma counseling and additional mental health resources are being made available.

Traffic was down to one lane for several hours while RCMP investigated and crews cleaned up debris.

All possible contributing factors are being considered. Wood Buffalo RCMP along with RCMP Collision Analyst continue to investigate.

The identity of the women will not be released.
