RCMP and EMS respond to fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 63

Wood Buffalo RCMP and Emergency Medical Services responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 63, approximately three kilometers north of Fort McKay, on Jan. 2, 2018 around 5:04 p.m.

A southbound pick up truck hit a wide load transport truck heading north on Highway 63.

The 51-year-old male driver of the pick up truck succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 66-year-old male passenger was transported to hospital via helicopter and is currently receiving medical treatment. The extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.

The driver and lone occupant of the wide load transport truck has not reported any injuries to police.

Emergency crews have completed their investigation at the scene, and both lanes of Highway 63 are now open for travel.

The wide load had two pilot trucks, one in front and the other behind.

RCMP are still investigating this incident and all possible contributing factors related to this collision are being considered.

RCMP are in the process of notifying the next of kin. The identity of the individuals involved will not be released out of respect for the families involved.
