Naloxone kits missing vials of medication

Albertans in possession of a naloxone kit are being asked to check its contents to ensure they contain at least two vials of the life-saving medication.

Alberta Health Services has received reports of missing vials in kits distributed to clinics and pharmacies in the province.

Each kit should contain two or three vials of the drug, two or three syringes, alcohol swabs, gloves, breathing mask and a brochure.

AHS is working closely with it’s third-party distributor and supplier to figure out the cause and extent of the issue.

If a kit has fewer than two vials of medication, it can be returned to a distribution site and replaced, free of charge.

Naloxone can temporarily reverse and opioid overdose if it’s used correctly and followed up by emergency medical care.

Albertans can get a kit free from most local pharmacies.

As of Dec. 31, 2017, 41,035 naloxone kits had been distributed in the province.
