The long awaited Willow Square Continuing Care Centre will see shovels in the ground by this spring.

Minister of Infrastructure, Sandra Jansen was in Fort McMurray on Friday to unveil initial design plans of the $110-million facility and noted that the project was on time to be complete by the spring of 2020.

“We are excited that construction will soon begin on this much-anticipated facility. The Willow Square Continuing Care Centre offers an opportunity for residents who have been instrumental to the growth of this community to remain here as they retire and age,” said Mayor Don Scott.

The facility will have 144 beds and deliver various levels of supportive living, long-term care and palliative care. The family-orientated design concept will include a playground and paths to local transit and amenities.

Alberta Health Services will be responsible for the new facility providing home care, supportive services and communal spaces such as a café, library, chapel, etc.

The Aging-in-Place facility currently has no start datebut Mayor Scott said they will keep advocating for the facility.

“I have been talking to the Minister of Health and the Minister of Seniors, we haven’t got firm answers from the two ministers yet. My council colleagues and I are going to keep twisting arms,” said Mayor Scott.

The RMWB has committed $10.5 million to Aging-in-Place if the province moves forward with the additional facility.
