Successful Alberta Winter Games leaves legacy on region

It was a successful weekend for the 2018 Alberta Winter Games.

Young athletes from across the province competed in 21 events in 19 different sports throughout the three days.

Approximately 2,440 athletes, coaches, chaperones and officials attended the sold out opening ceremonies and 1906 volunteers pitched in to make the games a success.

“As a Host Society, we are overjoyed by the number of out of town visitors who traveled to the region to attend the Games and the number of residents who came out to support our local athletes,” says Michelle Toner, General Manager of 2018 Wood Buffalo Alberta Winter Games. “The event was a tremendous success and it would not have been possible without the support of our dedicated volunteers, stakeholders, staff and sponsors.”

There was 67 athletes representing the Wood Buffalo region on the Zone 7 team, competing in various events.

Local snowboarder Sterling McNeilly won gold in both U16 Boarder Cross and U16 Slopestyle.

Zone 7 also received the Minister’s Cup for most improved Zone from previous Alberta Winter Games.

Altogether, Zone 7 brought homeĀ 6 gold, 8 silver, 8 bronze.
