A new six-station dialysis unit has replaced the dialysis bus used by the William J. Cadzow – Lac La Biche Healthcare Centre.

The new, permanent unit has increased the patient capacity from 10 to 12 and creates a more comfortable, reliable and spacious setting, including space for patients to bring company along with them while they undergo treatment.

Minister of Health Sarah Hoffman says since 2012, residents in need of dialysis have had to climb aboard an aging bus parked at the hospital.

“When I met with residents, they expressed their frustration around care in their community. We listened, and we acted. Now the bus has been replaced with a permanent dialysis unit so Albertans can receive dignified health care in their community.”

The new unit will serve Albertans from Smoky Lake and Vilna to Wandering River and Athabasca.

With a preliminary estimate of $3 million, the unit came in under budget at $2.4 million and was funded by the government of Alberta’s Infrastructure Maintenance Program.
