Design concepts for the Abasand Commemorative Lookout have been released for public vote.
One design puts the lookout on ground level, while the other raises the lookout by a metre.
Senior Manager of Public Works and Transit Services Marc Fortais said receiving feedback from the community on this project is important.
“It’s a lasting memorial to commemorate first responders and the resiliency of our citizens.”
The lookout was originally scheduled to be built on the Birchwood Trails, but after stakeholder discussions the site was changed.
Currently, there is only a general area towards the end of Abasand, looking out over the Athabasca River and community, that is being considered as the building site.
The lookout will be a place for the public to go and reflect on the beauty of the area while at the same time remember the 2016 evacuation.
Construction is expected to start in March with funding from the municipality and donations.
