The spring sitting of the Alberta legislature officially starts Thursday.

There are a few changes to the House as United Conservative Leader Jason Kenney takes his seat for the first time.

Government House Leader Brian Mason hopes the opposition will support a motion being brought forward Monday about the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project.

“I think it’s important that the legislature speak up on this issue, that all the MLA’s stand up and be counted and we make our position relative to opposition in British Columbia to the pipeline crystal clear.”

He said another hot topic will be focused around the legalization of cannabis.

“Traffic safety with respect to cannabis as well as how it is marketed and dealt with in terms of its commercial aspect.”

In terms of the budget, Mason said Finance Minister Joe Ceci will have a financial blue print of what will go into it on March 22nd.

Mason said based on consultations with Albertans, it will include ways of protecting programs and services while responsibly controlling costs and finding savings.

Other items on the agenda include diversifying the economy, support for the renewable energy sector and changes to the electricity system to address affordability for rate payers.
