The annual Fort McMurray half marathon returns to the community September 16, with a full 42.2 kilometer marathon race distance.

The event’s organizing committee wrote in a press release how trilled they were about the new addition.

“Part of the continued success of this event has been its ability to attract runners with a wide variety of athletic abilities, and as we’ve grown together, the support of our local running community has been critical to moving toward our long-term vision for this event.” explained Kelsey Stefanizyn, Fort McMurray Marathon Committee Chair.

Stefanizyn added that the committee hopes the event will put Fort McMurray on the race map and attract new runners from other communities across the country.

On race day, marathon participants, volunteers and spectators will gather at MacDonald Island Park for a day full of festivities including music, food, awards and family fun.

This year’s event will also feature a new fit to run program that will take place twice a week from April to Sept., free of charge with limited spots available for those registered in the Marathon.

Early bird registration will be available online on Monday, April 2, at 10 a.m. and runners will have the option to register for one of six race distances, including a full marathon (42.2km), half marathon (21.1 km), 10 km, 5 km, 3 km and a kid’s fun run.

For more information and to register as a runner or volunteer you can visit the website or Facebook page.

Route details and more information will be release when available.
