Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta and Syncrude announced the 10th nominee for the Women of Inspiration series 2017-2018 as Mehar Rashid.  The Women of Inspiration recognizes women throughout the region who inspire others, break new ground or old barriers and help create change.  The series also aims to show local girls positive role models who live right here.

Rashid moved to Fort McMurray in 2009 and started her career as a Kindergarten teacher with the Fort McMurray Public School District.  She went on to become the Vice Principal and teacher at Composite High School.  She now serves as the Principal of the Fort McMurray Islamic School.

As the first female principal of the school, Mehar is breaking down stereotypes and showing her students that anything is possible.  Members of the school council describe her as “someone who promotes a sense of belonging and provides a safe and caring environment for our children.”

“Sister Mehar is very smart, kind, honest and trustworthy. She is always smiling and cares about us and always stops to talk to us and see how we are doing. She is very helpful and caring. When I grow up I want to be confident and strong like her,” states one grade 4 student.

As principal, Mehar Rashid has taken the initiative to make the school experience positive by introducing and encouraging a multiple of clubs and activities and by encouraging students to get involved in their community.

“I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work alongside Mehar Rashid. She is incredibly hard working, intelligent and compassionate leader who is always looking out for the best interest of her students and staff.  She leads by example.  Her commitment to excellence is evident through the successes of our students. Mehar sets a very strong example for the young women in our school as she is a positive female role model in a leadership position. I believe that Mehar exemplifies what it means to be a Woman of Inspiration” states Mark Dolmont, Vice Principal of the Fort McMurray Islamic School.

Girls Inc. of Northern Alberta will honour Rashid and 11 other nominees at the Women of Inspiration Celebration which will take place June 16, 2018.
