The federal and provincial government announced Thursday that the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) will receive funding for infrastructure.

Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Sandra Jansen, Alberta Minister of Infrastructure signed a bilateral agreement between the province and Canada Tuesday.

The agreement will provide more than $3.3 billion in federal funding over the next 10 years, $17,905,869 of which has been allocated to the RMWB.

Mayor Don Scott referred to the funding as a “significant investment” and said the first use of the money will go towards transit turnout projects which were proposed in November.

“This money is going to be put towards those kind of projects. We’re going to make very good use of the money.”

Sohi said that having efficient transit plays an important role in building strong communities and giving everyone the opportunity to succeed.

Having the funding over the next 10 years allows flexibility to assess the needs of the region and communicate with community partners.

More than $180 billion dollars in government funding will be invested through the Investing in Canada plan over the next 12 years in public transit projects, green and social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes and Canada’s rural and northern communities.
