Local H.E.R.O. to hold fundraiser to keep medical evacuation services in region

The Local Helicopter Emergency Response Operations (H.E.R.O.) Foundation will be hosting their second annual fundraiser following last year’s successful East Coast lobster party.  Once again, all proceeds will help fund their emergency response helicopter operations.

When asked about the importance of the organization for the region, board chair of the foundation, Paul Spring recalled the recent tragic crash in Saskatchewan with the Humboldt Broncos junior A hockey team that claimed the lives of 15 people and injured 14 others, many who had to be air lifted to the hospital.

He also reminisced on a horrific crash on Highway 63 that Local H.E.R.O. responded to in 2012 which claimed seven lives.

Fundraising is crucial to the foundation to cover their operational costs, such as maintenance and fuel for their fleet of helicopters.

“It is kind of a dark subject talking about medevac but if you don’t fund it we can’t be there for when people really need us,” said Spring.

This year their fundraiser will be on Saturday, May 5 at Shell Place and will be a Mexican fiesta in correlation with Cinco De Mayo.  Guests can expect festive Mexican foods, a live mariachi band, auctions, 50/50 draw and dancing.

“It’s going to be a really fun evening, very bright, fiesta style,” said Spring. “The weather will be warmer by then, everybody will be in that, ‘hey winter is finally gone, let’s go out and celebrate,’ mood.”
