Former Mayor Melissa Blake has been named a federal member of the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments.

The board is a non-partisan body that provides the Prime Minister with recommendations on Senate nominations.

Melissa Blake said she was approached after the last election and decided to continue the process out of personal interest.

“I’ve always wondered about the Senate. I know here in Alberta we have Senator Elections and I didn’t know what that was all about, so it was part curiosity,” said Blake.

“It is a huge honour to have been selected. You look at a nation of great people and to have your name put forward as one to come into consideration it is pretty significant and I am very pleased.”

The board will establish assessment criteria to identify Canadians who reflect Canada’s diversity and contribute to the work of Parliament.

Blake will serve on the advisory board for two years.
